    • is a diuretic
  • Effects
    • causes a reduction in total body water by increasing loss of water through the kidneys
    • helps to decrease excess fluid in the lungs or in body cavities
  • Side Effects
    • increase in urination and drinking
    • most animals will not break house-training at standard doses
    • no other side effects such as drowsiness or loss of appetite
    • at higher doses, electrolyte balance can be affected, and electrolytes (such as potassium) may have to be monitored
    • occasionally, animals with preexisting weak kidneys can have decompensation into kidney failure, and kidney function may need to be monitored

    • animals can become resistant to this medication at high doses and long term administration
