Medication Info


  • Class of Medication
    • is a diuretic
    • usually used when furosemide is not still effective alone
  • Effects
    • causes a reduction in total body water by increasing loss of water through the kidneys
    • helps to decrease excess fluid in the lungs or in body cavities
  • Side Effects
    • since we use this when high doses of furosemide are ineffective
    • can cause kidney decompensation
    • kidney function will need to be monitored more closely
    • increase in urination and drinking
    • most animals will not break house-training at standard doses
    • no other side effects such as drowsiness or loss of appetite
    • at higher doses, electrolyte balance can be affected, and electrolytes (such as potassium) may have to be monitored
  • Other Info
    • animals can become resistant to this medication at high doses and long term administration
    • combined with spironolactone as Aldactazide®
